Gold-Plated vs. Gold Vermeil vs. Gold Filled: What's the Difference?

on Feb 04 2026
With the price of gold remaining historically high, many of you are asking the same question: How can I enjoy the look of gold without the price tag of solid-gold?That's where gold-enhanced jewellery comes in. Options like gold-plated, gold vermeil, and gold-filled jewellery make gold more accessible while still offering beauty, style, and quality - when chosen and cared for properly.Let's break down the differences so you can shop confidently. Gold-Plated Jewellery Gold-plated jewellery has a very thin layer, often 0.5-1.0 microns, of gold applied over the base jewellery. In many cases, that base metal is brass or stainless steel. Here, at GNM Fine Jewellers, the gold is plated over sterling silver.Gold-plated jewellery is affordable and tends to lean into the trending looks. Making this a great option for occasional wear or fashion pieces. Because the gold layer is thin, it will wear over time, and eventually the base metal will show through the plating. Gold Vermeil Gold vermeil (pronounced ver-may) is a step up from standard gold plating. It features a thicker layer of gold bonded over sterling silver, rather than a base metal. In Canada, gold vermeil is regulated by law. To legally be called gold vermeil, a piece must be electroplated with gold that is at least 10 karat gold and applied at a minimum thickness of 1.0 microns. Electroplating ensures stronger adhesion, helping the gold layer wear more evenly over time. Many of our gold vermeil pieces exceed these requirements, featuring a generous 2.5 micron layer of gold. Thanks to this thicker gold layer and the electroplating process, gold vermeil offers greater durability and longer-lasting wear when cared for properly. It holds up well through many everyday activities, making it a popular choice for regular wear. That said, we still recommend removing gold vermeil jewellery before swimming, using hot tubs, or exercising to help preserve its beauty for as long as possible. Gold-Filled Jewellery Gold-filled jewellery contains the thickest gold layer of the three, mechanically bonded to a core (often brass). Although it has the highest price point, it is much more resistant to fading or showing wear and can last many years with proper care. Bonus: What is Ion-Plating? Ion-plating is an advanced coating process commonly used on stainless steel jewellery to create an exceptionally durable gold-coloured finish. Unlike traditional plating, ion-plating bonds the gold layer to the metal at a molecular level, resulting in a finish that is far more resistant to scratching and fading. Our stainless steel pieces feature ion-plating, making them ideal for daily wear and active lifestyles while still delivering a polished, gold-inspired look. Caring for Gold-Enhanced Jewellery No matter which option you choose, proper care makes all the difference! Remove jewellery before showering, swimming, or exercising. Avoid contact with perfumes, lotions, hairspray, and household cleaners. Store pieces separately in a cool, dry place, preferably in a soft pouch or jewellery box. Avoid storing in the light. Clean gently with a soft cloth — no harsh cleaners or abrasives.  Put jewellery on after getting ready, not before. The Takeaway Gold-plated, gold vermeil, and gold-filled jewellery each serve a purpose, and none are "bad" choices. It simply depends on how often you will wear the piece, your budget, and your lifestyle. With gold prices remaining high, these options allow you to enjoy gold's beauty while being fashionable and budget-conscious.Shop our gold-enhanced jewellery here!

Is Your Jewelry Properly Insured? Gold Prices Have Surged—Here’s Why It Matters.

on Mar 25 2025
If it’s been a while since you last updated your jewelry appraisal, it might be time for a second look—especially if your piece contains gold. Over the past decade, the value of gold has seen a dramatic rise. In 2016, gold was sitting at around $1,250 USD per ounce. Fast forward to February 2026, and we’re now seeing prices consistently around $6700 USD per ounce—an increase of over 430%. That shift doesn’t just affect the price of new gold jewelry—it directly impacts the value of pieces you already own. Why This Matters for Your Jewelry Insurance Your insurance appraisal is what your coverage is based on. If your jewelry is appraised at a 2016 value, but gold has increased significantly since then, your insurance payout may not cover the full replacement cost if something happens to your piece. Many insurance companies recommend having your appraisal updated every five years, but with the recent market trends, we suggest checking even sooner—especially for gold-heavy items like chains, bracelets, or traditional wedding sets. Key Points to Keep in Mind: Gold is a global commodity—its price fluctuates with the market, and it has steadily risen over the last decade. Your original appraisal may now be outdated, meaning your current coverage could fall short. Appraisals are more than just paperwork—they’re an essential part of protecting your investment. Insurance companies often require an up-to-date appraisal in order to process claims or renew your policy properly. How GNM Can Help We offer professional insurance appraisals right here in-store, and we’re happy to walk you through what’s changed since your last one. Whether you purchased your jewelry from us or elsewhere, we’ll give you a detailed, up-to-date evaluation that reflects today’s gold market and ensures your coverage keeps up with its true value.     We're here to make sure you’re protected—and that your beautiful pieces are insured for what they’re really worth in today’s market.  📍 Visit us at 375 Main Street, Steinbach 📞 Call or text us at 204-326-3917

Spotlight on Custom Jewellery: A Perfect Set!

on Jul 18 2024
Creating custom jewellery is an art that combines craftsmanship, creativity, and a deep understanding of a client's desires. At GNM Fine Jewellers, we take pride in turning your cherished memories into timeless treasures! Today, we're excited to spotlight a recent commission that showcases the magic of custom design: a pair of exquisite earrings crafted to complement an engagement ring we designed the previous year. The Story Behind the Jewellery Commission Last year, we had the pleasure of designing a stunning new engagement ring for our clients B and L to celebrate their 25th anniversary . The ring was crafted using diamonds from B's original wedding set and anniversary bands, blending sentimental value into a brand new look for her to wear. This year, they returned to us with a request to create a matching pair of earrings, adding another chapter to their story and a gorgeous new piece to B's jewellery collection! Designing the Earrings Concept and Inspiration: The inspiration behind the earrings was to create a piece that would harmoniously complement the engagement ring while standing out as a unique statement on their own. Using the customer's gold and diamonds left after completion of the ring ensured that the earrings would not only match the ring but also carry the emotions and memories tied to the original jewellery. Materials and Craftsmanship: Crafted in high-polished 14 karat yellow gold, the earrings evoke elegance and a WOW reaction. The choice of yellow gold not only complements the engagement ring but also enhances the brilliance of the diamonds. Designed in a J-hook style with a post and butterfly back, the earrings offer a secure and comfortable fit, perfect for everyday wear or special occassions. The center stones of the earrings are each 0.50 carat diamonds, with SI2 clarity, H colour, and an excellent cut grading. These diamonds, repurposed from the original wedding set, are the main focal point of the earrings. Eighteen accenting diamonds add a beautiful touch of sparkle and sophistication to each earring, bringing the total diamond weight to an impressive 2.43 carats. The Final Design: The design is nothing short of breathtaking. The larger center stones are beautifully balanced with the more delicate accenting diamonds, creating a harmonious and eye-catching piece that our client can wear with confidence! A Lasting Legacy Custom jewellery holds a special place in the hearts of those who wear it. It is not just about the aesthetics; it's about the story, the emotions , and the memories that each piece carries. B's new earrings are now a part of her lasting legacy, a beautiful reminder of the love and memories she shares with L. By choosing to repurpose the diamonds and gold from her original wedding set and anniversary bands, B has preserved the sentimental value of those pieces while creating something new and beautiful. As she wears them, they will continue to shine brightly, just like the love story they represent. We are grateful for the opportunity to create such meaningful pieces for our clients and look forward to many more stories of love and legacy. If you have a vision for a custom piece or wish to repurpose your cherished jewellery, we invite you to book a free consultation with one of design team members. Together we can create a unique piece that tells your story and captures your memories.

Moissanite vs. Lab Diamonds vs. Natural Diamonds

on Jul 12 2024
When it comes to choosing the perfect gemstone for your jewellery, the options and information can seem overwhelming. Moissanite, lab-grown diamonds, and natural diamonds all offer unique characteristics and benefits, making each one suitable for different preferences and budgets. Within this article, we will explore some key differences between these three popular options, helping you make as informed decision for your next jewellery purchase. What is Moissanite? Moissanites are a gemstones originally discovered over 130 years ago in a meteor crated in Arizona. Initially identified as diamonds due to their similar properties, the mistake was soon discovered and the stones were named after the gentleman who had discovered them, Henri Moissan. Today, naturally occurring moissanite is incredibly rare and scientists have perfected the process of simulating them in a lab, making it easily accessible and a budget friendly choice for jewellery. Beware of anyone selling moissanites as moissanite diamonds! Moissanites do not have the same chemical makeup or qualities of a diamond nor do they hold the same value. What are Lab-Grown Diamonds? Lab-grown diamonds are also known as synthetic diamonds and are created in a controlled labroratory environment using advanced technological process that mimics the natural formation of diamonds. These diamonds have the same chemical, physical, and optical properties as natural diamonds and require special equipment to distinguish them from natural diamonds What are Natural Diamonds? Natural diamonds are formed naturally over billions of years, deep in the Earth's mantle and are extracted through mining processes. Natural diamonds are traditionally considered the gold standard for gemstones. Only around 30% of diamonds mined worldwide are of gem-quality, the rest are used in production and manufacturing industries. Comparing Key Characteristics Hardness and Durability:  Moissanite scores 9.25 on the Mohs scale of hardness, making it extremely durable and suitable for everyday wear. Both Lab-Grown and Natural Diamonds score a perfect 10 on the Mohs scale, making them the hardest known natural material. Brilliance and Fire:  Moissanite is known for it's brilliance and fire, with a refractive index of 2.6, given it a rainbow disco effect most noticeable in stones larger than 5mm. Both Lab-Grown and Natural Diamonds also offer exceptional brilliance, with a refractive index of 2.4, with less rainbow effects throughout their sparkle.  Colour and Clarity:  Moissanite are typically near-colourless but can exhibit a slight yellow or greyish hue in larger stones. Clarity is usually quite high as they are lab-created.. Lab-Grown Diamonds are available in a range of colours and clarities and are often produced to meet the high standards of natural diamonds Natural diamonds can range in colour and clarity from slightly yellow to colourless and for highly included to flawless. Variations are part of a natural diamonds unique make up and lead to a stone that is uniquely yours. Conclusion Choosing between moissanite, lab-grown diamonds, and natural diamonds ultimately comes down to personal preference and budget. Moissanite offers brilliance and affordability, perfect for those seeking a beautiful yet budget-friendly option. Lab-grown diamonds provide a cost-effective benefit while offering the quality and sparkle of a natural diamond. Natural diamonds, with their traditional prestige and higher value retention, remain the classic choice for many seeking a timeless choice. Whichever gemstone you choose, each option offers its own set of benefits and unique qualities, ensuring that your jewellery will be the perfect fit for you and your lifestyle. A rough diamond that's ready for cutting, polishing, and setting into a stunning piece of jewelry Why Choose Lab-Grown Diamonds?
